Accreditation to Teach in Catholic Schools (F–12)
For secondary teachers not teaching Religious Education, and specialist primary teachers not teaching in the classroom.
It is vital for the effectiveness of the Catholic school community that all members understand its purpose and mission. Principals and teachers need, therefore, to be accredited to teach in a Catholic school.
Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic School is a means of assisting all teachers in Catholic schools to develop a deeper understanding, not only of the nature of the school as part of the Church's mission, but also of their roles as members of staff. To achieve this goal, Catholic Education Melbourne and all diocesan offices in Victoria administer the policy of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV), Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic School (CECV Policy 1.6). This policy requires that a minimum of fifty (50) hours of study be completed in stipulated areas. It provides possibilities for completion either through school-based inservice activities, diocesan and regional seminars or formal courses. For further information read The Means of Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic School.
Teachers entering Catholic education without being accredited to teach in a Catholic school are granted a five-year period from the commencement of employment to secure their accreditation.
When the above criteria have been met, an application may be made, using the application form. Applicants must be currently teaching in a Catholic school, and will need to provide a copy of their Victorian Institute of Teaching registration. A certificate of accreditation will be issued by the CECV.
